Drinking Water - A Necessity for Life |
| |
|
Don't leave home without it |
One of the first things you will need in many emergency situations is clean, drinkable water. In some situations,
this is easy to come by, in others, very difficult.
You may want to have some bottled water on hand for quick use. If you do, then be sure and check the expiration
dates and keep them current.
Humans should be ingesting two liters of liquid every day. Even more when it gets hot or they are active. Drinkable
water (called "potable water" by officials) is also used for cooking. It doesn't take too long to run through a
case or two of bottled water. That presents problems-- both in cost and in storage space.
I recommend a water filter for emergency preparedness.
Because of the volume of water that a couple or a family would need every day, bottled water isn't practical.
However, with a water filter, you don't need clean water, you just need water. A good filter will clean and purify
the water you have available, making it suitable for drinking, cooking, brushing your teeth, etc.
Notice that sentence said "purify". There are several kinds and levels of water filter available but only a few are
reallly adequate for emergency preparedness. Most of them you will find in your local store are really made to work
with water that is already safe to drink, just unpleasant to taste... or to look at.
But in an emergency, your water source (even the water from the tap) may be contaminated. (This is why officials
will issue warnings and urge residents to boil the water before using after hurricance, earthquakes, tornadoes,
floods, and other natural disasters.) Unless you purchased a water filter with this in mind, you are risking your
life and the life of your family.
However, there are good water filters available that can purify the water and help keep you safe and
healthy.
First Need and Katadyn (see next pages for them) go head to head. Each have users who swear by them and each
have impressive test figures and track records. You can't go too far wrong with either one.
John J Simmons has been learning about and practicing preparedness for over forty years since he became a Boy
Scout. He tests out concept and practices before he recommends them to others.
